Chick Orders (March-June)

Pre-season orders open the first week of the year.

Chicks: Hatching Chicks are sold by a waitlisted order. Orders are dispatched depending upon 2 factors: when payment is first received and our hatching availability. Our waitlist usually fills up every year, so we do offer a backup list. Chick season typically runs March-June every year, with Coturnix Quail sometimes hatching through July.

2024 Waitlist Update: We have decided to change our previous business model, where we would waitlist orders to a specific date. It became too tedious to re-organize dozens of orders around a specific hatch date when we didn’t have enough chicks of a specific breed. We are switching to a first come, first served ordering system with roughly 3 to 4 Hatching Time-Frames per season.
For 2024 these timeframes will be:
1st- Expect Chicks Early March through Mid April~
2nd – Expect Chicks Mid April through Mid May~
3rd – Expect Chicks Mid May through June~
We will try our best to accommodate everyone’s order in a timely fashion. It is very typical to have to fulfill orders that have multiple breeds, and sometimes it might take us a little longer to do so. Because of this, we will fill orders based off what hatches, and some people may be bumped to the next hatch to ensure an order is completely filled.
Color Preferences:
While we try our hardest to accommodate color preferences with each breed with every customer, what hatches is ultimately out of our control, and we are unable to process refunds if not enough of a specific color hatch (or showgirl status) unless it is clearly discussed before placing an order. If you require a very specific color of bird – for example: only Paints from the Paint/Black/White Pen, or only Black Coppers from our Black Copper/Blue Copper pen, then please understand it may require additional time for us to complete your order.

Cancellation/No Show Policy

When chicks hatch, we will go down the list and let folks know their chicks are ready for pickup or are ready to be shipped. You will be contacted through the same method the order was placed. We ship ONLY on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesdays (depending on distance).
By ordering, you agree to pick up your chicks within Seven Days of Hatching, or have planned for them to be shipped with us in advance. If you are unable to respond to messages within 2 days of your order notification, you will be placed at the bottom of the list.
If you are unable to take chicks at that time, you will be moved to the bottom of the list for that hatching time-frame. If the list is full, this may result in your order being bumped into the next hatching time frame, or in extreme circumstances, being cancelled. Please note we are unable to process refunds on your deposit if you are unable to contact us within a timely fashion to cancel or reschedule an order.

Egg Orders

Eggs are very limited during hatching season, as we reserve the majority of our eggs to hatch for our clients. As of 2024, we will be only accepting a limited number of fertile egg orders from March-June. We tend to reserve these orders for teachers with classrooms, and 4H Families, but please reach out to us and inquire about our availability. We are planning to have more availability on Quail Eggs throughout the hatching season, for both hatching and for eating. If we have any availability on fertile-hatching-eggs during March-June, we will post on our Facebook page.

Extra Chicks from Hatches

If we have extra chicks from our hatches during the March-June season, we will go down our backup list, and then offer those chicks to the public. These birds will be posted on our Facebook Page when they are available. Make sure you are following us on our Social Media, as these chicks tend to sell out quick!

Quail & Large Orders

Quail are able to be ordered in larger batches, when compared to our chickens. We should be able to accommodate orders of Quail between 10-100 chicks throughout the season. Orders over 100 may need to be split. We are typically unable to prepare single orders of over 15-20 chicken chicks of one breed at one time. Orders that require more than this amount may need to be split into multiple hatches, which can result in chicks being up to a few weeks in age, apart.

Outside of Hatching Season (June-December)

Additionally, we offer private hatches for chicks from June-December pending my personal availability, as well as hen cooperation, fertility, and weather (if being shipped). The minimum amount required for a private hatch is 15 chicks. We always set extra eggs to accommodate private orders, and occasionally will be able to offer a few extra chicks for free. If 15 chicks are too many, we suggest and recommend going in with a friend to fill an order.

Contributing Factors of Hatching

Eggs from all of our pens are fertility checked on a weekly basis. We crack open a few eggs from each pen to check for bullseyes, and determine if our cock birds have been doing their jobs. This helps insure we are selling only the freshest, fertile eggs to our clients, ultimately giving you the best chances to hatch healthy baby chicks.
Additionally, we strive to keep a clean, and healthy environment for our birds to live, and thrive in. Pens are cleaned routine, properly ventilated and all of our coops are insulated (heat is not provided except in extreme circumstances), to prevent eggs from freezing

Please note: We are a small family run farm. We do not keep hundreds of birds on our property. We are not a large “quantity type” hatchery. We keep only our best breeders and breed forward our best lines. This is done to ensure a higher quality chicken than what is typically offered at the large hatcheries, or feed stores. Because of this, we sometimes do not have availability, or we will be sold out for a few weeks to a few months

Egg & Chick Prices

Copper Marans – Black Copper & Blue Copper
$60 per dozen Fertile Hatching Eggs. $12.00 per straight run chick.

Our Marans are bred to conform to the Standards of Perfection (SOP) – meaning we breed to for a compilation of the desired qualities and characteristics of a breed of livestock usually with indication of the faults to be especially avoided. We do strive for the beautiful dark egg color that Marans’ are renown for, but it is a secondary trait we are working on. Egg color is a genetic trait, and we only sell and incubate eggs that are 4’s or higher on the Marans scale, giving you the best chance to obtain the desired chocolate colored egg.
We now only have Black Copper Cocks over & Blue & Black Copper hens. Chicks will hatch both blue & black copper. We do not have Splash Copper in our flock as of 03/2023. While it will always vary, you can expect approximately 50-70% Black Copper Chicks, 30-50% Blue Copper Chicks from a dozen eggs. Please note, that there is no guarantee of a certain color; only that you can hatch these 2 colors from our Marans pens.
While we try to accommodate color choices, it ultimately is up to the birds what color chicks hatch. Please be aware that we will not be able to push back, or cancel orders based on what colors our Marans hatch as.

Olive Egger – Multigenerational 1st to 4th Generations
$40 per dozen Fertile Hatching Eggs. $10.00 per straight run chick.

Our Olive Eggers can vary in appearance! They may hatch black, blue, or have some barring patterns, may have copper or silver (also known as birchen) on their wings and necks, have feathered or non feathered legs/shanks, may have cheek muffs, and or small crests, and will have pea or straight combs. Most olive egger pullets/hens will lay varying shades of green, but there is also a chance that our back-cross olive eggers will lay shades of brown like our Marans. In late 2022 we introduced new lines of second-fourth generation Olive Eggers. We are excited to see what our darker cross-back generations will lay in 2024! We are potentially exploring some test breeding with a blue-homozygeous cock if we see a lot of brown laying pullets/hens in the next year or two. Stay tuned to see how our project develops!

Silkies & Showgirls – Red Project Pen
$60 per dozen Fertile Hatching Eggs. $15.00 per straight run chick.

Our Red Silkie Project pen is our one of our most coveted colors. We have Partridge, Red, and Red x Partridge Colored Hens with Red Cocks. We currently have black and wheaten based birds in our flock, and are seeing a variety of stunning colors come from our chicks. If you are looking for Showgirls (naked neck Silkies), this pen has the highest chance of producing them, and can also produce a double showgirl gene, in which the chicks will have no feathers from the bottom of the beak, down to the breastbone- this is called a “Stripper” Silkie. (Yes, we laugh at this terminology too)

Chicks will hatch varying shades of red and partridge colors. Red Silkies are a project color being worked on by a small handful of breeders in the USA. Originally from overseas, this color can be obtained by importing Red Silkies to the USA, or by breeding to Red non-Silkie birds, and selectively breeding back many, many generations to maintain color and Silkie traits alike. We purchased some stunning stock from reputable breeders a few years ago and have been working to perfect our line ever since. We are always striving to achieve a darker mahogany color in our birds.
While we try to accommodate color choices, and personal preferences on showgirls, it ultimately is up to the birds what color/types chicks hatch. Please be aware that we will not be able to push back, or cancel orders based on what colors our Silkies in the red pen hatch, and if they are, or are not showgirls.

Egg & Chick Prices Continued…

Silkies & Showgirls – Paint Pen (Silkies, Frizzles, Satins)$60 per dozen Fertile Hatching Eggs. $15.00 per straight run chick.

Our Paint Silkie Pen has a little of everything. Chicks can hatch 3 different colors: Paint, Black and Dominant White (I/I) – which is different genetically than your traditional, normal white color. We have 4 Showgirls (naked neck Silkies) in this pen, as well as 4 Frizzled hens, and two Satin (Smooth) hens in addition to our standard Silkied Feather birds. Chicks can hatch with normal Silkied feathers, but may hatch as Frizzles or Satins, and some may be Showgirls. There is even a chance to get a Satin Showgirl, Satin Frizzled Showgirl, or Frizzled Showgirl.
While we try to accommodate color choices, and personal preferences on showgirls, it ultimately is up to the birds what color/types chicks hatch. Please be aware that we will not be able to push back, or cancel orders based on what colors our Silkies in the Paint pen hatch, and if they are, or are not showgirls.
We do not guarantee feather types in this pen. There is no way to tell what type of feathers these day old chicks have inherited until their primaries grow in (typically 7-14 days).

Focusing on creating the heaviest/largest bird with an emphasis on fun and exciting color morphs.

We currently are focusing our efforts on raising a new type of bird on our little homestead. The Coturnix Quail! We currently have one large aviary; housing around 55 birds. Our goal is to create a colorful assortment of larger Coturnix that can be used as a dual purpose bird.
Quail are a relatively new backyard project for many people. I can tell you from personal experience… the hype is worth it! You will fall in love with these adorable, and tiny birds. Many HOAs that do not allow chickens (or roosters) will allow you to have quail (even male quail!).
Coturnix only require half to one square foot per bird, are fully mature in eight weeks, and have a lifespan of 2-3 years. Coturnix Quail lay an average of ~300 eggs per year, are very unlikely to ever become sick from illnesses like Salmonella (due to their high body temperatures), their eggs can be eaten raw (and are considered a delicacy!), and are some of the highest sources of protein per gram of meat of any bird!
Quail eggs range in size, but average around 12-16 grams per (substitute 3-4 eggs for one large chicken egg), are typically a beige and brown speckled color, but can be blue (celadon), and have gray, purplish or greenish blooms.
Program Goals: We are not currently working on color specifics, but rather breeding our largest birds from any one of our 15 or so color morphs. Chicks will hatch all sorts of beautiful colors. Jumbo and Standard Coturnix are actually the same breed of quail – but Jumbos have been bred to be a larger, heavier type quail that are fantastic for both meat and egg production. Since our program is still young, weight & color type will vary. Because this is a new project, birds from our flock at maturity will weigh in anywhere between 6 oz to 15 oz. Any bird that is over 10oz can be “Classified” as a jumbo, despite it’s color morph. All of 2024, all our cock birds (boys) are over 8.5 oz – The average weight of the 7 cocks in our flock is just under 10 oz, right about 9.75oz. We are hopeful that we can increase weight in our program by keeping only the largest birds (with the best assortment of colors, of course!) and increase the average size of our Quail a little more every season.
